Creative Labs and the Pharisees

Here’s the story so far (from Engadget):
1. Creative Labs soundcards have serious issues working in Vista (esp the Audigy cards).
2. A really smart dude Daniel_K comes with unofficial patches to make the cards run properly.
3. Creative Labs gets wind of it and issues a cease and desist to stop Daniel_K from distributing the patch.

Here’s part of a story I remember:
2 Pharisees are deep in discussion…
Pharisee1: He has no right to do that, he can’t do that on the Sabbath.
Pharisee2: I think it’s ok, the guy got his hand back.
Pharisee1: But he’s hitting our turf man. We are going to look bad.
Pharisee2: Hello??? The dude got his hand back. His. Whole. Hand. What part of that are you not getting?
Pharisee1: Doesn’t matter, our IP got infringed. I think we crucify the Jesus guy.
Pharisee2: I think it’s a bad idea, we are going to be in for some serious backlash if we do that.
Pharisee1: Backlash smashlash. I am going to check with our lawyers, we are soooooo going to get him.

That’s why Creative Labs is going down the drain.

100MBPs at 44.90€

Orange just sent a notice for 100MBPs (fibre optic) at 44.90€ for:
1. Free phonecalls to landlines in France
2. Free TV

A bit ex considering Free.fr does 28MBPs at 29.99€; for:
1. Free phonecalls to landlines to 70 countries (incl. Spore with free calls to mobiles)
2. Free TV

Don’t think we’ll switch, price difference a bit high.

I sold out: Part II

It’s about Week 4 since I have sold out. I am regularly using Stacks and the coverflow-like document/image preview for browsing my stuff. Good golly they really work. So far no crashes due to software conflicts, then again I don’t have much software for it except for MS Office V.x, Thunderbird, VLC and other small utilities. Wifi reception is great and battery life is good too. I also profiled the 13.1inch screen, colors are pretty much spot on, that was pleasantly surprising. I took out VMWare coz the 30day trial was running out.

Speaking of battery life, back here in our apartment I have also taken out the Macbook battery and left it on the mains on sleep mode coz I don’t like the battery in while the AC adapter is plugged in. But I woke up this morning to find the plug on the floor and Macbook sleep light has gone off. Sianz, have to reboot. So I plug the power in and open up the lid… Guess what, the OS resumed from sleep mode after a short delay.

What kinda power is this thing running on?????

Wes

PS: I think OS 10.5/Macbook actually writes the current state to HDD vs OS 10.4/Powerbook, that’s how it remembers the sleep state. No wonder it goes to sleep slower than the old Powerbooks. The more I use this OS the more I like it.

PPS: I reformatted the 3-year-old WinXP machine and put in 2 new Seagate ES 500GB HDDs. Took about 2 days of sweat and CD swapping. It was worth it, it’s humming along fine with almost a 200% speed boost (32sec from POST ‘bleep’ to desktop) for startup time. Only has CS2, CaptureOne, Dreamweaver, Freehand, Nero, printer/video drivers and nothing else on it. No MSN, no DIVX and no games. Got the data files are triplicated again and sent CaptureOne cache folders to the new HDDs. Speed increase. Hmmm… nice… feels like a brand new machine. Geek pwrrrr rules.

back in paris, again

We arrived in Paris last night about 8plus. Got home. Jo unpacked. I checked email, updated FB. And knocked out on our very own bed after 5 weeks (!) in Spore. We extended one week due to a project that Jo was doing so the stint in Spore got a wee bit draggy. I have some projects to rush for March so likely no msn nor FB for most of March. cho kang time.

So… what do you do for a living?

Had dinner with couple friends who were based in Sydney for the last 4 years, they are back for good now. The wife mentioned that for one year, their friends in church never once asked her what she did for a living. I thought it was interesting, until I realized that when I did the same to people in Paris, they looked slightly surprised that part of the introduction included a ‘what do you do for a living?’.

This gives me much food for thought:

1. Maybe some people don’t link the SELF with work.
2. Maybe a huge part of we are is tied up with career/work?
3. In the social context, is it wrong to talk/ask about work?
4. When asking, am I quietly ranking the person?
5. Or maybe we just talking about work?

In the meantime, while I sort this thing out, I am going to stop asking people what they do for a living and start talking about the weather. Hah.
