When the sun and metro go on strike..

The French transport system has gone on strike….again. So KW and I are stuck in our little apartment with the heater up and windows closed. He works on the computer table, I work from the bed on my laptop. All communication with the outside world is online….and yes, i am including facebook scrabulousing as outside comms too. We sip decaf coffee or hot infusion tea from time to time, curse and swear at the last person to leave the building who forgets to close the door behind her (hence letting the draft in and proving that our heater can only heat up 30 square metres of air at one time), go tsk tsk at all the youth crimes we see on Sky News, play detective over the recent updates on the Princess Diana’s death inquisition, and shift furniture around when we get bored with the space. And when all else fails to entertain us further, we pile on the clothes and head out to buy groceries (must be a substantial amount coz it’s too much to convince ourselves to wear for like a bar of butter or bottle of milk).

I am missing the sun in Singapore. Not the humidity though. Just the feeling of the sun on my face (ok, it’s a moment thing I am thinking about, not a realistic stand in the sun and get heatstroke reality). It’s not winter yet but the days are darker and much much shorter. Feels like even the sun has gone on strike.

With the metros, it looks like they will be down for a while. The plan is to strike till 20 Nov when the court folks go on strike too. Man. I should bring out my walking shoes…

Apples and Oranges

Note: I made a mistake with the E6850, it is *not* quad core. So I have re-edited the post.

Just spec-ed a PC this morning. It’s for video editing and other serious stuff…

Q6700 (x4core @ 2.4GHz) + 4GB RAM (expandable to 8GB)
+ 8800GT 256MB+ 500GB HDD + mid tower case, etc. is ~S$2k.

Macpro equivalent of Dual core Xeon Woodcrest (x4core @2GHz)
+ 4GB RAM + X1900XT 512MB + 250GB HDD is S$5615.90.

Not a 100% fair comparison (coz Macpro is a server and it has more RAM slots & you can buy cheaper RAM elsewhere) but you get the general idea. =)

<rant>No wonder they can’t port Final Cut Pro. That’s about the only thing keeping me from jumping 100%.</rant>

Back to Paris

Was in Spore for 4 weeks (longer than the 3 weeks we planned) and came back to Paris on Friday night. Waited about 1 hour for the shuttle to arrive coz SQ332 was early. Ride was awesome, plane was 1/2 full so I had 3 seats for a 3 hour nap on the flight that started at 12.40pm (Spore time). =)

We stayed at AMK (yay to Mom & Dad for free laundry and food!) for the duration. Helped take pictures at my brother’s wedding, he was nice enough to sponsor a plane ride home for me. I can’t post them, but I saw Sheldon’s Facebook page has some nice shots. Met up with old MYFer’s… it was so funny, with all the kids running around. In the last week, I had to finish a project, had some really great help from old friends, and God. Otherwise dono how to pull through.

While traveling on the highway back to our apartment, I realized that I really missed the space in Paris. The space to think, the space to breathe. It’s good to be home.
